Goal Setting Tips and Secrets

I found a site that will help me start setting goals.  It has varied ideas on the subject.  Right click the link below and open in another tab to go to the site.

Quote 8

Don't let your past write the story of your future.  Tomorrow is a blank page that we can author today, for our thoughts and actions are the script writers, casting department and the director of the story we write daily on the pages of our perception.

Don't Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Making a Difference

I started this blog at a time when I had just recovered from major depression. A person suffering from depression is difficult to understand and hard to empathize with. It is normal for a person to become "depressed" or sad when he has some problems or loses a loved one, or is going through difficult changes in his life, and will be able to recover from it afterwards, with or without any external help. It is different for a person who is suffering from major depression. His state of mind is filled with hopelessness and helplessness, and it is almost impossible for him to be optimistic. Sometimes it is difficult even to receive help, though help is available.

I made this blog so that when the time comes that I suffer from it again, I will have the tools to help myself to rise out of it. I have resolved that I will fight and not be beaten by it again.

Another reason is the hope that when perhaps sometime, someone out there would feel helpless and hopeless, and will stumble upon this page, the tools here, if not I, myself, will be able to help him.  Even if it would only be one person, even if I would not know of it, or even if I would not know him, I will consider that I have not lived in vain, for I have made a difference in someone else's life.

Poem

How Many People Does It Take to Make a Difference?

One.

One Song can spark a moment
One flower can wake a dream
One tree can start a forest
One bird can herald spring
One smile begins with friendship
One handclasp lifts a soul
One star can guide a ship at sea
One word can frame the goal
One vote can change a nation
One sunbeam lights up a room
One candle wipes out darkness
One laugh will conquer gloom
One step must start each journey
One word must start a prayer
One hope will raise your spirits
One touch can show you care
One voice can speak with wisdom
One heart can know what’s true
One life can make a difference

That difference starts with you.

Poem

Making a Difference

Can I say today in honesty
As the hours slip by so fast
That I’ve helped a single person
Of the many I have passed?

Did I waste the day or lose it
Was it well or properly spent
Did I leave a trail of kindness
Or moments of content?

As I close my eyes to slumber
I hope that God will say
“You have made the world a better place
By the way you lived today.”

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Max Ehrmann c.1920

Light and Shade

This is one of my favorites.  I like the tune, I like the lyrics.  It's as if somebody read my mind and knew how I felt and wrote a song for me. - Rence

Light and Shade
Fra Lippo Lippi

He will paint the light and shades
The colours and the trees
He will climb the steepest hill
Believing what he sees
He will lay down on the ground
Beneath the old oak tree
He will sleep forever
If you try to set him free.

Sail on the wings of a cloud
Where to, well nobody knows
And cry, cry if you want them to see
Die every day to be free
Be proud to wear the colours that you call your own
Be loud, speak out when you want the world to know
Be strong, hold the flame for everyone to see
Be real, if you want to love.

He will paint the endless sea.
A mystery to me
He will reach out for the sun,
Not dreaming what he sees
He will fall down on his knees
Angel touching ground
Takes him to the other side
Sweet love is coming down.

Everything Happens for a Reason

There are times in our lives, especially during trying times, that we wonder why those things happen to us.  Our trials are even magnified when we are surrounded by people who seem to have no problems at all, and they have it all going for them.

We may not have all the answers at the moment, but the best thing to do during these times is to hold on.  We may get impatient, irritable, angry, sad, or even depressed, but all of these are normal reactions to those circumstances.  Hold on, hoping that tomorrow brings a new day, a new hope, a new beginning.

In all of these, the time will come soon or even much later, the realization, that these things happen maybe for the following reasons:
1.  to mold us
2.  to know ourselves
3.  to know the people who surround us
4.  to know our purpose
5.  to fulfill our purpose

Holding on sometimes is easier said than done.  There are times that it is easier to give up, to get angry, to withdraw.  But it becomes easier with the presence of persons who listen, who believe, and who have faith in us despite our circumstances.  Sometimes they don't need to speak a word.  Sometimes they only need to make us feel that they are there for us.

But what if, in spite of the their presence in our lives, we still feel that we have no one to turn to?  We are too caught up by our situations that it is too hard to receive external help.  We only have to look inside, for we have ourselves.  Each person has the self to believe in him.  Each person has a friend in himself.  Believe in yourself.  Accept yourself.  Love yourself.  Be good to yourself.  Accomplishing these will open up a whole new perspective of the world, the people around us, and even our circumstances, and you will emerge a new person with a new perspective, a new purpose, a new reason to live.

Perhaps, these are the reasons why those things even happened in the first place.

The Quitter

The Quitter
by Robert William Service

When you're lost in the Wild, and you're scared as a child,
And Death looks you bang in the eye,
And you're sore as a boil, it's according to Hoyle
To cock your revolver and . . . die.
But the Code of a Man says: "Fight all you can,"
And self-dissolution is barred.
In hunger and woe, oh, it's easy to blow . . .
It's the hell-served-for-breakfast that's hard.

"You're sick of the game!" Well, now, that's a shame.
You're young and you're brave and you're bright.
"You've had a raw deal!" I know -- but don't squeal,
Buck up, do your damnedest, and fight.
It's the plugging away that will win you the day,
So don't be a piker, old pard!
Just draw on your grit; it's so easy to quit:
It's the keeping-your-chin-up that's hard.

It's easy to cry that you're beaten -- and die;
It's easy to crawfish and crawl;
But to fight and to fight when hope's out of sight --
Why, that's the best game of them all!
And though you come out of each gruelling bout,
All broken and beaten and scarred,
Just have one more try -- it's dead easy to die,
It's the keeping-on-living that's hard.

True Colors

This song has helped me a lot to recover from my last bout of depression. This song encourages me to accept myself for who I am because somehow, somewhere, someone believes in me. Please take time to read the lyrics. - Rence

True Colors

You with the sad eyes
don't be discouraged oh I realize
it's hard to take courage in a world full of people
you can lose sight of it all and the darkness inside you
can make you feel so small.

But I see your true colors shining through
I see your true colors and that's why I love you
so don't be afraid to let them show your true colors
true colors are beautiful like a rainbow.

Show me a smile then don't be unhappy,
can't remember when I last saw you laughing
if this world makes you crazy and you've taken all you can bear
you call me up because you know I'll be there.

And I'll see your true colors shining through
I see your true colors and that's why I love you
so don't be afraid to let them show your true colors
true colors are beautiful like a rainbow.

For a Moment
